DAVID BIRD BIO

David J Bird is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has found his passion in pedal steel.  Originally from London, Ontario, where he trained as an audio engineer at OIART, David currently resides in Victoria, BC, by way of Toronto and Peterborough, Ontario.  He has toured with Nick Ferrio & His Feelings playing both steel and bass guitars, and creates his own experimental ambient blend of guitars as Yin & Tonic.  When not behind a steel, he finds creative outlets in photography and poetry.

KAYLA HOWRAN BIO

Kayla is gearing up to take an album’s worth of brand new songs into the Studio with producer, Colin Cripps (Blue Rodeo, Kathleen Edwards) to record her next album!  Look out for the record September 2016!

After moving to Toronto, Kayla found a foothold in the country and rockabilly roots of the Queen Street music scene. She and her band, The Fellas, began playing at The Cameron House in September 2010, and quickly established one of the hottest weekly residences on Queen Street. Every Friday night Kayla’s powerful vocals would fill the bar as she and The Fellas spurred on a dance floor full of patrons with bourbon-soaked two-steps, meandering tales of love lost, and everything in between. The Kayla Howran Band now plays the first Friday of every month on that same stage and tends to perform in a more roots/alt country genre.

Kayla has shared the stage with Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo and Andy Maize of the Skydiggers. She was backed at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto by Daniel Romano and his band opening for Jim Cuddy and Danny Michel. Her band has opened for JD McPherson and Pokey LaFarge amoung others.

In 2013 Kayla lent her vocals to a track on Canadian progressive rock band, Protest The Hero’s record, Volition. In 2014 that record won a Juno.

Kayla has a rare ability to lean on her influences without imitating them, which lends a genuine quality to her music that is often absent from many of her contemporaries.

She sings with the conviction of someone who has lived every bit of joy, agony, and heartbreak contained within her songs. However, it is Kayla’s voice that truly sets her apart. Powerful enough to rise above the din of a packed hall, yet with a softness that evokes the tender emotions of transfixed onlookers, Kayla controls the mood of the room with the skill of a baton-wielding maestro.
